As we reflect on Brenda Harris’s life and legacy, we remember with gratitude our dear friend and longtime volunteer whose dedication touched so many in the sarcoidosis community.
Brenda was one of FSR’s longest serving volunteers, supporting the Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research since its inception in the year 2000. We will not only remember Brenda for her longevity as a volunteer, but also through her commitment. She has served in nearly every volunteer role that FSR has established; from Patient Navigator and Patient Advocate to being a valued member of the Women of Color Committee—an important initiative addressing the disparities faced by Black and African American women diagnosed with sarcoidosis. She also served as a Community Group Leader for the FSR/GSCA Community Group at Fairfax Inova Hospital where she created a welcoming space for patients and caregivers by facilitating meaningful discussions, sharing educational resources, and fostering connection within the community.
Brenda’s son, Quintin Veasley, said of his mother “In loving memory of my mother, Brenda Harris. As we raise awareness of sarcoidosis, I honor your strength, your love, and the precious moments we shared. Your life means more than any illness could ever define. I will carry your memory in my heart and help keep hope alive for those affected by sarcoidosis. I love you always, Mom.”
Mary McGowan, President and CEO of FSR, shared, “Brenda will be remembered for the way she used her own personal journey as a beacon of hope and support for others living with sarcoidosis. She brought joy, empathy, and understanding to her work and the whole sarcoidosis community. She will be deeply missed, but her impact on the sarcoidosis will live on in all who she touched as a passionate and dedicated volunteer leader.”
Dr. Shambhu Aryal, Director of the Inova Lung Transplant Program and Inova Sarcoidosis Center, an FSR Global Sarcoidosis Clinic Alliance Founding Member shared that “Brenda did not let sarcoidosis define her. She essentially started the Inova Sarcoidosis Support group and was a big inspiration to many of us, providers, and patients alike. She will be deeply missed.”
We invite our community to contribute personal stories and reflections about Brenda. These memories will be gathered as a tribute to her legacy. Here are a few that have already been shared:
Brenda was a remarkable woman—feisty, spirited, and incredibly knowledgeable about sarcoidosis. From the moment I met her, she made me feel welcome and at home. Her warmth, strength, and willingness to share her wisdom left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
What I will remember most is her unwavering determination. Brenda faced every challenge with courage and resilience, never allowing her circumstances to define her spirit. She truly fought until the very end, and her strength will continue to inspire me for years to come.
Rest peacefully, Brenda. Your legacy of strength, grace, and perseverance will never be forgotten.
My deepest condolences to Brenda’s family, friends, and everyone whose life she touched. May her memory continue to inspire others to face life’s challenges with the same courage and determination she exemplified.

Meeting Brenda through our shared journey in the sarcoidosis community was a true honor. I was inspired by her strength, her dedication, and the meaningful way she used her voice to support others. Her contributions will continue to reach people, create greater understanding, and make a difference far beyond the time we had with her.
I will miss her presence and remain grateful that our paths crossed. My heartfelt condolences are with her family, friends, and everyone in the FSR community who loved and worked alongside her.
With gratitude and remembrance,
– Kathryn W.
